This is an old postcard of the village of Croydon-cum-Clopton which I have provisionally dated to around 1900 but it might be earlier The original postcard in my collection is brown and very faded and I have had to increase the contrast substantially to bring out the details.

A couple of things to note. The 'Queen Adelaide' is clearly recognisable centre shot. The pub and the pub sign are both set on the line of the old road through the village, presumeably

  stilll being used to some degree (despite the High Street being re-routed to its present position).

Two of the three [?] cottages in the row to the left of the "Queen Adelaide" were single storey at the time of the photograph.

This is an old postcard of the village of Croydon-cum-Clopton looking east which I have provisionally dated to around 1950. The original postcard is in my collection. The road sweeps left at the top of the photograph to the war memorial triangle just out of sght.

A couple of things to note. No cars. The farm building top right opposite Church Farm has gone. The roadside hedges shown are all neatly cut back which indicates it was still a largely agricultural economy and workforce. The old-fashioned haystacks

   have been replaced in season with mini-mountains of neatly squared-off bales.

The two cottages on the left are still there with, I was curiously pleased to note, the same porches over both front doors. The local authority housing opposite the two cottages has yet to be built.

If you have any old postcards or photographs of Croydon-cum-Clopton I would be delighted to add them to this page. Someone kept outbidding me on eBay for anything to do with Croydon village six or seven years back so somebody somewhere has put together an impressive collection! If local, I'd be pleased to collect, carefully scan and return the photographs safely within the hour.   Alternatively, please send me good quality scans at 1750px width with location and any known background. Send as a full size .jpg file and do not 'compress' or 'sharpen' images before you send them!

Baptismal Font 2003
Croydon Parish Church

The font in All Saints is a square limestone bowl dating from the 12th century.
The bowl would have been used to baptise most of the parishioners listed in the "Speculum Gregis".

This public house was also known as the "Carpenter's Arms" and was situated just outside
Croydon village on the road to Arrington.
