NOTES:
Sir Robert Peel's Juries Act of 1825 made possession of property the basic qualification to be a Juror. In the simplest terms, any person who was liable to pay rates would qualify.
The Juries Act which related to England and Wales laid down the following qualifications for jury service. A juror should (1) possess an income of £10.00 a year from real estate or rent charge, or £20.00 a year from leasehold of not less than twenty-one years, or (2) should be a householder living in premises which were rated no less than £20.00 a year, or (3) should occupy a house containing no fewer than 15 windows.
In practice, Jurors in the 19th century were usually gentlemen, and either rich or having independent means. In rural areas this meant farmers and landowners. Very few Jurors were women (and none in the following list).
